The Rhondda Red Kites welcomed teams from across the South West to Pontyclun for their first ever BAFA NFFL home game day, battling not only three incredibly difficult opponents but also relentless swirling winds that made conditions challenging from the opening whistle until the final play. Facing the Cardiff Bay Coyotes, Keynsham Kings and Exeter Falcons in succession was always going to be a monumental task, particularly with two undefeated sides arriving in Pontyclun. Yet despite the scorelines, the Red Kites showed undeniable heart, resilience, and flashes of the exciting talent continuing to emerge within the squad.
The day began with a clash against Cardiff Bay Coyotes, and from the opening drive the Red Kites looked sharp and composed. Moving the ball effectively through the difficult conditions, the offense showed confidence early as quarterback Josh Howells orchestrated a promising opening series. That confidence was rewarded when Howells fired a pass toward rookie wide receiver Ioan Davis-Cale, who battled through tight coverage to make an impressive contested catch in the end zone for the Red Kites’ first touchdown of the day. It was a moment that underlined the growing chemistry within the offense and hinted at what the team is capable of when momentum begins to build.
Defensively, the Red Kites continued to fight with intensity, and rookie blitzer Sion Davies-Cale produced one of the standout defensive plays of the day. Getting to the quarterback quickly, Sion was able to capitalise on excellent coverage from the defensive backs, who locked down the passing options long enough for him to secure a safety in the opposition end zone adding two more points to the Red Kites tally and demonstrating the aggressive defensive style the team is striving to build around. However, Cardiff Bay gradually found their rhythm and began to assert control on both sides of the ball. Despite the Red Kites’ determination and disciplined flag pulling in difficult conditions, the Coyotes capitalised on their opportunities and eventually pulled away to secure a 34–8 victory.
There was little time to recover before the Red Kites lined up against one of the toughest teams in the division, the undefeated Keynsham Kings. From the outset, Keynsham displayed exactly why they were unbeaten, combining disciplined offense with a relentless defense that punished mistakes and controlled field position. Still, the Red Kites refused to back down. Early pressure from blitzer Anthony Wright disrupted the Kings’ offense and briefly unsettled their rhythm, while the Red Kites offense continued to show glimpses of creativity and composure despite the mounting pressure.
As the game wore on, Keynsham’s depth and experience began to show, but the Red Kites kept battling until the final whistle. Late in the second half, quarterback James Carlson floated a difficult pass toward veteran receiver Luke Morgan. Despite the awkward trajectory of the ball and defensive pressure closing in, Morgan managed to bring the pass in cleanly and secure the touchdown, giving the Red Kites another well-earned six points. Keynsham ultimately demonstrated their class with a dominant 49–6 victory, but the Red Kites once again showed they were willing to compete for every yard and every flag pull.
The final game of the day saw the Red Kites face another undefeated powerhouse in the Exeter Falcons. Although fatigue was beginning to set in after two bruising contests, the Red Kites entered the game determined to finish the day strongly. The match was played in excellent spirit between two highly competitive sides, with Exeter showcasing a disciplined defensive performance that consistently limited the Red Kites to short gains and closed down space quickly.
Yet even against one of the strongest defenses in the division, the Red Kites still found moments to shine. Rookie wide receiver Gareth Downs delivered one of the most electrifying plays of the entire game day, breaking free downfield and using sheer pace to race the length of the field for his first ever touchdown. It was a moment that energised the Red Kites sideline and served as another reminder of the exciting talent beginning to emerge within the roster.
The Red Kites nearly added further points in dramatic fashion when safety James Carlson intercepted an Exeter extra point attempt and immediately turned upfield looking to take it all the way back to the house. For a moment it appeared the defense might produce another unforgettable highlight as Carlson weaved through traffic with open field ahead of him, only for Exeter to recover and pull his flags before he could complete the return. Exeter would eventually secure a 44–6 victory, but the final score once again failed to fully reflect the effort, discipline, and determination shown by the Red Kites throughout the contest.
While the results column may not have favoured the hosts, the day represented another important step forward for the Rhondda Red Kites. Hosting their first BAFA NFFL game day was a milestone moment for the club, and throughout all three games the team demonstrated resilience, togetherness, and a refusal to quit even against some of the strongest opposition in the league. The flashes of talent on display — particularly from the team’s emerging rookies — will give coaches and players every reason to believe there is far more to come as preparations now begin for the upcoming fixtures in Exeter.
